Asia America Gateway

The Asia America Gateway (AAG) is a 20, 000-km, high-bandwidth fiber optic submarine cable system that connects Southeast Asia to the United States. It provides connectivity between Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and the US West Coast and seamless interconnection with other major cable systems connecting Europe, Australia, other parts of Asia and Africa and will utilize the field-proven Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology to provide upgrade-able, future-proof transmission facilities for telecommunications traffic.

ASEAN Cableship Pte Ltd was awarded in laying Segment 1B, 1I and Segment 2 in this project.

Singapore (Segment 1B): Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) installation for 340 meters. 10 km rock-cutting operation with “Rocksaw”. 20 km deep burial cable lay with “Injector”.

Hong Kong (Segment 1I): Shore end articulated piping, follow by 60 km deep burial cable lay with “Injector”, going through 13 cable crossings.

Hong Kong (Segment 2): Shore end articulated piping, follow by 70 km deep burial cable lay with “Injector”, going through 10 cable crossings.

This illustration shows an example of installation by injection jetting techniques. It is designed to lay and bury the cable simultaneously with minimal disturbance to the seabed. The injection jetting helps to liquefy the sediments at the desired installation level to aid with the burial at the target depth.

Divers will be on standby during the installation to ensure the functioning and positioning of the injector.

Once the position is confirmed, the cable laying barge travels slowly (approximately 200-300 m/hr) along the planned cable route.
